How to program a Chamberlain, Craftsman, or Lift-Master Transmitter with a “Smart” or learn button on the receiver.
All of these openers that have been manufactured within the last few years have a learn button on the receiver in place of the older code switches that were once used to program a remote control device to the garage door opener receiver. These include any of the Security+ (rolling code) or Billion Code transmitters that were manufactured by Chamberlain regardless of the brand name on the unit.
Programming Steps: 1) Locate the smart button on the motor head which is directly under the screw terminals where the push button and photo-cell wires connect to the unit and above the antenna wire. You may have to remove a lens or light cover to gain access to the learn button.
2) Push the smart button momentarily (Holding the smart button until the L.E.D. light beside the button goes out will erase all transmitter and keyless entries that are programmed into the unit) and verify the L.E.D. light next to the button is lit solid.
3) Push the transmitter button that you want to use for that door within thirty seconds and before the L.E.D. goes out. The L.E.D. will flash once and the transmitter will operate the door the next time the button is pushed.
4) If you have more than one door and a multi-button transmitter repeat steps 2-3 above for each door by using a different transmitter button for each unit. (Using the same button for more then one door at the same location will cause all the doors using that button to open and close at the same time and is not recommended.) The openers normally come with a single or a 3-button transmitter but 2-button and 4-button transmitters are also available as an option.
5) Repeat steps 2-3 above if you have more than one transmitter to program into your garage door opener.
A remote control transmitter on a Chamberlain, Craftsman, or Lift-Master opener can also be set by using the multi-function wall control panel if your unit is equipped with a 3-button wall control.
Some builder or contractor models come with a single door bell type button and may not be possible to perform without changing the button to a multi-function control panel from your local dealer’s parts department.
1) Push and hold the new remote transmitter push button with the door in the closed position.
2) Push and hold the Light (button w/ light bulb symbol on it) button on the wall door control.
3) While continuing to hold the transmitter and the light button, push and hold the door control push bar that is used to open and close the door.
4) After the opener lights on the motor head flash, release all buttons. The transmitter should operate the door the next time the button is pushed.
How to program a Genie Intellicode or Overhead Codedodger transmitter.
1) Locate the Learn Code Button and Radio Signal Indicator above the antenna on the motor head of your garage door opener. You may have to remove a lens or light cover to gain access to the learn button.
2) Push the learn code button momentarily. The radio signal indicator L.E.D. will blink approximately two times per second.
3) Push one of the transmitter buttons once within 30 seconds. The radio signal indicator will stay lit solid.
4) Push the exact same transmitter button again within 30 seconds. The radio signal indicator will go out and the transmitter will now operate the door.
5) Repeat steps 2-4 for each transmitter that is to be learned into the unit.
How to program any transmitter that has code switches.
Prior to the newer type transmitters that come permanently set by the manufacturer, transmitter codes were set by a number of rocker or slide switches that could be changed by the end user. While most transmitters had a set of nine switches there are some that have eight and some that have twelve switches. The switches were either a binary (two position) rocker switch or a trinary (three position) slide switch.
If the transmitters and the receiver have code switches it is usually just a matter of setting all of the code switches the same if you have single button transmitters. There are some exceptions to this rule on multiple button transmitters and on Alstar/Allister/Pulsar products using binary switches on one device & trinary switches on the other. If you have one of these devices please use our contact us form for specific instructions by supplying the brand name, the number of buttons, and any other information that is available.
The binary rocker switches are normally marked on one side and “open” or “off” is one position and “closed” or “on” is the other position. The trinary switches are marked on the left with a “+” on top, “0” in the middle, and “-” on the bottom.
If the transmitters have code switches and the receiver has a “learn” button set all the code switches the same in all of the transmitters. Push the learn button on the motor head momentarily and then push the button on any of the transmitters and all of the transmitters will be set to operate the door.
How to program a built in car or vehicle transmitter.
Instead of listing the programming instructions here we suggest that you use Home Links site and follow their directions.
Please note that many vehicles that were manufactured before 1999 may not program into the newer rolling code type transmitters and some built after 1999 may not be compatible with non-rolling code devices. However the vehicles currently being produced will normally work on either type.
