Garage Door Standard Sizes can and do vary in different geographical areas and even between
different sub-divisions within the same city or town.

Many people search for “standard garage door sizes” on a daily basis. However there are many common size garage door widths and heights but the standard size is probably more a matter of the age of your home and what area of the town, state, or country that you live in.  There are a number of standard sizes for residential garage doors in the United States. As was stated above they will sometimes vary between different neighborhoods and different regions across the country. The standard size may be different depending on how long ago your home was built because as the American automobile & SUVs got bigger the garage doors openings & the garages themselves  had to be made larger to accommodate these larger vehicles.

Two Tall Single Car Garage Doors

So while the standard 16x7 double car garage door worked well for years many have been surprised by the fact that their new SUV or nice 4x4 will not fit underneath the header of the opening. Therefore in the late 1990’s builders started to build their new homes with garage door openings that were up to 8’ tall or even more sometimes so that homeowners could continue to park their vehicles inside where they will be safe and secure.

Hence in some areas most of the newer doors will be 9x7, 9x8, 16x7, or 16x8. However there are many developments where the builder wanted a little different look from every other neighborhood and may have used 10’ wide or 18’ wide doors. Although there are some areas where some of the older homes used 14’ and 15’ wide doors on a regular basis.

More recently on many newer homes there is a much greater range of sizes even though they are still considered to be a standard size by many manufacturers. Many simply make the door sections 18”, 21” or some use 24” and use a combination of sizes to obtain the height that is required. For most of the standard sizes up to 8’ tall please refer to our standard garage door size chart below.

Although also within the last few years that has been a much bigger demand for garage doors that are even taller than 8’ and many door manufacturers responded by making them up to 12’ or even 14’ tall.  However you should contact a local IDA garage door dealer to determine which models are available in what sizes. There are simply to many variables & sizes to list them all here in an understandable format.

The list below contains the most standard sectional garage door sizes that are made by most manufacturers. In addition to the sizes below, some manufacturers have other standard width & height sizes for some of their particular models. In addition to the standard sizes most manufacturers will produce doors in custom widths. Although there may be an additional up-charge to the next higher width for a custom size door.
